Who is Sparkfund?

Sparkfund is the utility services company unlocking capacity on the grid.

Through its Distributed Capacity Procurement (DCP) model, Sparkfund enables utilities, energy majors, and large-load customers to deploy front-of-the-meter batteries and gensets as distribution infrastructure. By adding targeted capacity exactly where and when the grid needs it most, DCP helps meet demand, support reliability, and put downward pressure on rates.

Sparkfund supports program design, grid value assessment, asset host engagement, and value chain management to ensure on-time, on-budget deployment with maximum system value and lowest cost.

With more than 3,200 projects deployed across 43 states and more than 300MW of energized assets constructed, Sparkfund is transforming customer-sited assets into a valuable portfolio resource for the benefit of our society.

Our Story

Sparkfund: Turning Distributed Capacity into Core Infrastructure

Sparkfund began by financing energy infrastructure inside commercial buildings. We pioneered early as-a-service models for energy efficiency and on-site energy assets, changing how organizations paid for and managed the equipment in their buildings. That work built the capability Sparkfund still runs on: deploying infrastructure across thousands of sites, on time and on budget.

In 2017, Sparkfund made a bet that utilities would lead an energy transition driven more by infrastructure needs than consumer adoption. While much of the market focused on direct-to-consumer models and sustainability value propositions, Sparkfund recognized that as hard economic signals like manufacturing reshoring and data center growth reached scale, energy demand would follow, requiring utility expertise in infrastructure planning, load growth, and the needs of the grid.

Since then, Sparkfund has partnered directly with utilities, building on their customer relationships and grid knowledge. That partnership model became Distributed Capacity Procurement (DCP), and it rests on a simple view: utilities play the vital role in doubling the grid at the lowest marginal cost to society. In April 2026, the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission unanimously approved Capacity*Connect, Xcel Energy’s first-in-the-nation distributed capacity procurement program, with up to 200 MW of front-of-the-meter battery storage.

"Something that's always made Sparkfund different is a belief that the energy transition is more about infrastructure and less about customer adoption. From that point of view, utilities have a foundational role in delivering the grid, a landscape-scale machine that forms the basis of our economy, keeps the lights on and keeps people safe.”
